Metrobus and Metrorail
Please note that The Commuter Store and Mobile Commuter Store add a 25 cent convenience fee to the cost of WMATA products (Metrobus and Metrorail fares and SmarTrip cards). There is no convenience fee added for discounted fare media for seniors and persons with disabilities. CommuterDirect.com does not add a convenience fee.
SmarTrip card ($2, no fare value included). A permanent, rechargeable farecard that can hold up to $300 in fare value. Cards can be used on Metrorail, Metrobus, and local buses. Fare value can be added at Metrorail farecard machines and on Metrobuses. More information.

SmarTrip card with One-Day Unlimited Pass ($15.50). Pass available on SmarTrip® cards is valid for one day of unlimited Metrorail and Metrobus travel; no time restrictions. The pass is activated the first time the card is tapped and expires at the end of the operating day. Other regional buses are not included. On Metrobus Express and Airport routes, the pass covers the first $2 of fare.
SmarTrip card with 3-Day Unlimited Pass ($35.75). Pass available on SmarTrip® cards at Commuter Stores only. Valid for three consecutive days of unlimited Metrorail and Metrobus travel; no time restrictions. The pass is activated the first time the card is tapped and expires at the end of the third consecutive operating day. Other regional buses are not included. On Metrobus Express and Airport routes, the pass covers the first $2 of fare.
SmarTrip card with 7-Day Unlimited Pass ($62.75). SmarTrip card including pass for 7 consecutive days of unlimited Metrorail and Metrobus travel. Other regional buses are not included. On Metrobus Express and Airport routes, the pass covers the first $2 of fare. Pass is activated the first time it is used.
SmarTrip card with 7-Day Short Trip Pass ($42.50). Pass is activated the first time it is used. It is valid for seven consecutive days of unlimited rides on WMATA Metrorail for trips costing up to $3.85 when peak fares are in effect. During these times, if your trip costs more than $3.85, the additional charge will be deducted from the SmarTrip® card's stored value. There is no charge for rail trips at other times. A positive stored value is required to enter the Metrorail system. Metrobus trips are free with this pass. On Metrobus Express and Airport routes, the pass covers the first $2 of fare.
MARC Train
One Way Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). Good for one-way travel, in either direction, between the zones indicated on the ticket. For a round trip, buy two One Way Tickets. Ticket expires six months from purchase date.
Unlimited Weekly Pass (cost varies with fare zones). Good for unlimited travel on MARC between the stations indicated on the pass beginning on the Saturday of the designated week until midnight of the following Friday. Weekly pass can be used on Montgomery County Ride-On Buses and MTA Bus, Light Rail, and Baltimore Metro Subway service. Weekly pass can also be used on WMATA's Metrobus system, good for the base fare on all Metrobuses in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia.
Monday-Friday Weekly Pass (cost varies with fare zones). Good for unlimited travel on MARC Monday-Friday ONLY, between the stations indicated on the pass, during the week indicated on the pass. Can be used Monday-Friday ONLY on the local transit systems listed above for the Unlimited Weekly Pass.
Unlimited Monthly Pass (cost varies with fare zones). Good for unlimited travel between the stations indicated on the pass during a calendar month. They are non-transferable, but partially refundable up to the 10th service day of the month. Monthly pass can be used on Montgomery County Ride-On Buses and MTA Bus, Light Rail, and Baltimore Metro Subway service. Monthly pass can also be used on WMATA's Metrobus system, good for the base fare on all Metrobuses in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia.
MARC Transit Link Card (cost varies with fare zones). Allows unlimited travel on MARC and Metro for one calendar month, and is also valid for the base fare on Metrobus and MTA services.
Discounted MARC Fares
MARC Student Discounts. Students are eligible for a 15% discount on all MARC tickets except TLC and disabled passes. To receive the discount at The Commuter Store™, students must show a Student Advantage Card and a valid student identification card. MARC Ticket Refund Policy
Single-ride tickets are non-refundable. Weekly tickets are refundable if return postmark dated no later than 11:59 p.m. the Friday prior to the effective week. Monthly and TLC tickets are refundable, based on return postmark date, as follows:
- Postmarked prior to effective month = 100% refund
- Postmarked 1st through 5th of effective month = 75% refund
- Postmarked 6th through 10th of effective month = 50% refund
- Postmarked after the 10th of effective month = 0% refund
- TLC ticket refunds will not include the $80 Metro portion after the 1st of the month
MTA Commuter Bus
Ten-Trip Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). Good for ten trips within the designated zone.
Monthly Pass (cost varies with fare zones). Good for unlimited rides within the designated zone during the month printed on the pass.
Transit Link Card (cost varies with fare zones). Valid for unlimited travel for one month within the designated zone, AND Metrorail, Metrobus, MTA Local & Express Buses, MTA Light Rail, MTA Metro Subway (Baltimore), MTA Baltimore Neighborhood Shuttles.

Senior / Disabled Fares - MTA offers discounted fares for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. About purchasing discounted fares.
Virginia Railway Express (VRE)
Single Ride Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). Good for one-way travel, in either direction, between the fare zones indicated on the ticket, including all zones in between. Tickets can have up to two single rides per pass. Single-Ride tickets must be used within six months of the first day of validation. They are transferable, but non-refundable. Single-Ride tickets are NOT accepted on Amtrak trains.
Ten-Trip Ticket (cost varies with fare zones). 15% Savings. Very Economical, good for ten one-way trips between the fare zones indicated on the ticket. Ten-Trip tickets must be used within six months of the first day of validation. They are transferable, but non-refundable. Ten-Trip tickets are accepted on select Amtrak trains (see schedule). Multiple persons can travel on one ticket as long as there is one validation per passenger.
7-Day Pass (cost varies with fare zones). Good for unlimited travel for five consecutive VRE service days from activation within the zones indicated. 20% savings. Must be activated by validating at a ticket vending machine prior to the first trip. If not activated, expires one year from purchase.
Monthly Pass (cost varies with fare zones). 30% Savings. Your best bargain. Good for unlimited travel between fare zones indicated on the ticket during a calendar month. They are non-transferable, but refundable up to the 15th service day of the month.
VRE Transit Link Card (cost varies with fare zones). The VRE TLC allows unlimited travel on VRE and Metrorail for one calendar month, and is also valid for the base fare on Metrobus and DASH.
Discounted VRE Fares
Seniors, Disabled and Youth Fares - 50% Savings. VRE offers discounted tickets for persons with disabilities, senior citizens and youths (ages 21 and under) at 50% off the cost of a single-ride ticket. Children six and under may ride for free when traveling with an adult. About purchasing discounted fares.
STAR (Specialized Transit for Arlington Residents) Coupon Booklets
To pay fare for trips using STAR (Specialized Transit for Arlington Residents). Coupons are worth $4.50 or $6.20 and are sold in booklets of 10. Other coupon denominations are available to combine to total new STAR fares. ID must be on file with CommuterDirect.com to purchase. STAR Fare, Zone 1: $4.50 for trips inside Arlington. You can use the $4.00 and $.50 or the $4.50 STAR Coupons to pay for these trips.
STAR Fare, Zone 2: $6.20 for trips to DC, Alexandria, Falls Church, or Fairfax County inside the Beltway as well as Inova Fairfax Hospital/Woodburn Mental Health campus. You can use the $5.50 and $.70 or the $6.20 STAR Coupons to pay for these trips.
STAR Fare, Zone 3: $10.70 for trips to Fairfax County outside the Beltway, Montgomery County or Prince George’s County. You can use a combination of STAR Coupons to pay for these trips.
About Discounted Fares for Seniors, Disabled Persons, and Students
Several transit agencies offer discounted fare media for seniors, disabled persons, and students. To purchase these discounted farecards from The Commuter Store™, Seniors may present any ID showing age. Students must present a valid student ID or other proof of school enrollment. Disabled persons under the age of 65 must have a Metro Disability ID Card or other proof of disability. Metro Disability ID Cards are only available at Metro’s Headquarters, located at 600 5th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001. To purchase discounted fares online from Commuter Direct.com, seniors, persons with disabilities, and students must set up an account and have the appropriate ID on file.
